Expose and Bond Procedure
What Is an Expose and Bond?
An expose and bond is a minor surgical procedure performed to help a tooth that has not properly erupted
(come through the gums) move into its correct position. This is most commonly done for impacted canine teeth.
Why Is This Procedure Needed?
Sometimes a tooth becomes impacted, meaning it is stuck beneath the gums or bone and cannot erupt on its own.
This can happen due to:
- Lack of space in the mouth
- Improper positioning of the tooth
- Obstruction from other teeth
An expose and bond procedure helps:
- Guide the tooth into proper alignment
- Prevent damage to surrounding teeth
- Reduce the risk of infection or cyst formation
- Preserve your natural tooth
How the Procedure Works
Step 1: Expose
The oral surgeon gently opens the gum tissue to locate the impacted tooth. In some cases, a small amount of
bone may be removed to fully uncover the tooth.
Step 2: Bond
Once the tooth is exposed, a small orthodontic bracket is securely attached to it. A fine chain or wire is then
connected to the bracket.
This chain is later used by your orthodontist to carefully guide the tooth into its proper position over time.
